Caritas Romana – Wikipedia
The books of memorable facts and sayings by Valerius Maximus, which were created around 30 AD under Tiberius (14-37 AD), contain among other things the story of “Caritas Romana” (Roman Charity) in two different versions. The story is about a parent who is supposed to starve in prison. In the first version by Valerius Maximus, it is the mother, while in the second version it is the father. Only the young daughter is allowed to enter, after she has been thoroughly searched for food. However, the daughter, who had just given birth, offers her own breast for the parent to drink from, thus saving him/her from starvation.
